The Name of Cornelius Adam Aumen

Aumen Children

The names of Adam Aumen and Silas Aumen are occasionally included in the genealogies of Barnabas of Annie Margaret Aumen in addition to their other eleven children: Margaret Sauerwald, John Aumen, Cornelius Aumen, Francis Joseph Aumen, Maria Margaret Reinsel, Catherine Louise Anna Kuhn, Mary Caroline Murren, Lucinda Catherine Stansbaury, William John Aumen, Edward Augustus Aumen, and Sylvester Barnard “Wesley” Aumen.

Silas Aumen

Concerning Silas Aumen, it is not known for sure that he is a child of Barnabas and Annie Margaret.  All that is known of him is that he is buried next to Barnabas and Annie Margaret in the Saint Aloysius Cemetery at Littlestown.  He may be a brother, uncle, grandson, or even a nephew of Barnabas.  It is likely that Silas is not a child as one obituary for Barnabas Aumen states that he had only eleven children with ten surviving.

Adam Aumen

Concerning Adam Aumen, he is the mysterious child found only in the Saint Aloysius Catholic Church baptismal register, baptized with his siblings Margaret, John, Francis, and Catherine Aumen in 1851.  The church records says that Adam was born on July 3, 1842.

Aumen Children in the Saint Aloysius Baptism Register

In The Descendants of Barnabas Aumen, the author Col. Arthur S. Cunningham, Jr. raises the question of whether Silas Aumen is Adam Aumen, but states that this is only speculation.  This article maintains that Adam Aumen is in fact Cornelius Aumen, the third child of Barnabas and Annie Margaret, and offers sources and arguments for that assertion.

Documents Showing Cornelius as "Cornelius A. Aumen"

Court documents concerning the dispute over Barnabas Aumen’s mental health can be found in the family book by Cunningham.  These court records list the name of Cornelius as “ C.A. Aumen.”

In "Barnhardt" Aumen's obituary, Cornelius is listed as "Cornelius A., of York."  This is clearly a middle initial as the middle initials of Barnhardt's other sons are also given.

Cornelius and Adam Share the Same Birthday

Also, it is odd that Cornelius would not be baptized with his siblings, but that an obscure "Adam" who is mentioned nowhere else with a similar birthday is listed instead.  From additional information, we can see that Cornelius and Adam must have the same birthday. Cornelius' tombstone gives his birthday as July 8, 1840, but the age listed in Cornelius' obituary (76 years, 6 months, 26 days) would place his birth in 1842.  Of the two years, 1842 must be correct, as it is biologically impossible for Cornelius to be born eight months after the birth of his brother, John, who was born on December 15, 1839.  This gives Cornelius a birth of July 1842 which is the same month and year as Adam's birth. Cornelius A. Aumen and Adam Amend must be the man Cornelius Adam Aumen.

Cornelius Adam Aumen's Exact Birthday

As for the day on which Cornelius Adam was born in July 1842, there are the possibilities of the 3rd, 8th, and 9th.   The age in his obituary places his birth on July 9th, 1842, and this is likely the result of a calculation error.  Although his tombstone in St. Aloysius Cemetery reads July 8, 1840, his death certificate reads July 8, 1842.  Adam's birthday in the Saint Aloysius baptismal register is July 3, 1842.  Could the registry date of July 3 also be misconstrued as a sloppy July 8?  This appears unlikely that it could when the "3" is compared with other "3's" on the registry page.  So could the priest have made a transcription error, or could Barnabas and Annie have told him the wrong date?  The baptism did take place six years after the fact.  Either way, it can be established that Cornelius Adam Aumen, the third child and second son of Barnabas and Annie Margaret Aumen was born in the month of July, 1842, in Schoenburg-Hartenstein in the Kingdom of Bavaria.

Fr. Paul Aumen, C.PP.S. 1922-2010

Posted on December 18, 2010 by admin

Fr. Paul Aumen, C.PP.S., 88, died 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010, in the infirmary at St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Ohio. He had been in failing health in recent weeks.

He was born January 10, 1922, in York, Pa., to Bernard and Bertha (Smith) Aumen. He entered the Society of the Precious Blood in 1938 and was ordained March 25, 1949.

Fr. Aumen spent his first years as a priest in parish ministry in Ohio, at St. Joseph Church, Wapakoneta; Corpus Christi Church, Dayton; and St. Mary Church, Hamilton. In 1954 he was named assistant pastor of Holy Trinity Church, Columbia, Pa.

In 1955, Fr. Aumen volunteered for ministry in the province’s mission in Chile, where he remained for the next 20 years. Fr. Aumen ministered in parishes in Santiago and Valdivia. He was appointed vicar director in 1962.

In 1975 Fr. Aumen went to Guatemala, convinced that the country’s extreme poverty and lack of priests made it perfect mission territory for the C.PP.S. Not everyone agreed. Fr. Aumen set out on a tireless campaign to establish a Guatemalan mission. He worked for 10 years, ministering to the people of Guatemala, establishing a seminary, writing letters back to the United States and to his confreres in Chile, before he finally received approval for the work he was already doing and Guatemala became a mission in 1985 and was entrusted to the Chilean Vicariate in 1986. His persistence in the face of complete adversity (he was told once by the province that the mission in Guatemala would absolutely not be approved) was legendary, as was his concern for the poorest of God’s children.

Fr. Aumen returned to the United States in 1993, when he made his home in New Oxford, Adams County, Pennsylvania.  There he entered into the retreat and renewal ministry, and helped in parishes in the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  Even there, he continued to minister to the people of Guatemala; he published his missionary memories, "Springtime in Guatemala," in 2006.  Revenues from the sale of the book went to support the people there.

Always, his deeply compassionate heart was with the people he served, and in a way he never left the mission he founded.  "No one will ever know what it is to be poor until he or she has lived in poverty," he wrote in Springtime in Guatemala.  "In fact, there are missionaries who have fathomed the deep sorrow and desperation of those who live this way because they are able to pick up on their heart-wringing anguish. It took me almost three years before I realized that this had happened to me."

Fr. Aumen ministered in parishes in Santiago and Valdivia. He was appointed vicar provincial in 1962. In 1975 Fr. Aumen struck out for Guatemala, convinced that the country's extreme poverty and lack of priests made it perfect mission territory for the C.PP.S. His persistence in the face of complete adversity (he was told once by the province that the mission in Guatemala would absolutely not be approved) was legendary, as was his concern for the poorest of God's children. Fr. Aumen returned to the United States in 1993, when he made his home in New Oxford. There he entered into the retreat and renewal ministry, and helped in parishes in the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pa. in the Hanover area. Even there, he continued to minister to the people of Guatemala; he published his missionary memories, Springtime in Guatemala, in 2006. It took me almost three years before I realized that this had happened to me." Survivors include his siblings and their spouses, Sr. Paula Mary Aumen, RSM, of McSherrystown; Estella Gebhart of New Oxford; Thomas and Brigetta Aumen of Hamilton, Ohio; Bertha Kuhn of Abbottstown; Lawrence and Nancy Aumen of New Oxford; Charlotte Hull of York; and Adrian and Leslie Aumen of Spring Grove; a sister-in-law, Margaret Aumen, Abbottstown; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard (and his wife Bernadette) and Philip; a sister, Theresa DelRosso; and two brothers-in-law, Regis Gebhart and John Kuhn. A funeral will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Charles Center. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon Monday, December 20, 2010, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Hanover, with the Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt officiating. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends and relatives will be received at Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Drive, Hanover on Sunday 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday 10 a.m. to the time of the service. Born on October 2, 1877 according to death certificate.

The Cunningham Book lists her as having died in November 20, 1879 and being buried in Saint Joseph Cemetery in Bonneauville, Pennsylvania, but this is considered a mistake as the same information is listed for her sister Mary Agnes who died at three years old, and “Annie” was obviously alive for the 1880 U.S. Census.  Book also gives birthday of October 9th, which is her baptism date.

In 1850, he and his family lived in Germany Township, Adams County, and it appears as if he lived much of his life in the Hanover, York County, area. He was a farmer by trade.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 3, 1864, and mustered into federal service there the following day with Co. G, 209th Pa Inf, serving at the rank of private until honorably discharged with his company on May 31, 1865.

He transferred his G.A.R. membership from Hanover's Major Jenkins Post 99 to the post in York.

It can be noted from the above that John H. Waltman served in the same Union Infantry outfit with Annie’s father, Private Cornelius Aumen, during the Civil War.  Perhaps he was there when Cornelius was wounded during the fighting at Fort Steadman on March 25, 1865, two months before Private John Waltman was discharged.
