Margaret Elizabeth

Volume 1: The Family of Margaret Elizabeth Aumen Gusmann Sauerwald

With much thanks to Bill Sauerwald

Frederick and Margaret Sauerwald

Margaret Aumen was born on September 26, 1837 in Schoenburg-Hartenstein, Kingdom of Bier/Bayern/Bavaria.  She was the first daughter and eldest child of Barnabas and Annie Margaret Aumen.

In 1844 she came to America with her parents and younger brothers, leaving from the port of Bremen and arriving in Baltimore, Maryland.  Her family settled in near the town of Germany in Adams County, Pennsylvania, where she grew up on her father's farm.

She was baptized "Margaretha Amend" at Saint Aloysius Catholic Church in Littlestown, Adams County, Pennsylvania with her siblings Joannes, Adam, Franciscus, and Catharina Ludovica Anna, by Fr. Francis Xavier Deneckere S.J. on August 17, 1851. Her baptismal sponsor was  _____ Gouger.  Her parents are listed as Bernardi & Margaretha (Kindsler) Amend, and her birthday is listed as September 26, 1837.

Baptism of Margaretha Amend and her siblings

Her middle name was Elizabeth.  Her marriage to Anthony Gusmann at Conewago Chapel gives her middle name as "Elis." This gives her the exact same name as her niece and daughter-in-law whose name is also Margaret Elizabeth Aumen Sauerwald.  It should also be noted that Margaret Aumen Gusmann Sauerwald's birthday in September 26, according to the Saint Aloysius baptismal registry, and her younger daughter-in-law Margaret Elizabeth Aumen Sauerwald's birthday is August 26.

On December 27, 1859, she married her first husband, Anthony Gusmann, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Conewago Township, Edge Grove, Pennsylvania.  Anthony, or rather Anton as the German is, was born about 1832 in Fellen, Main Spessart, Bayern, Germany.  To this union two children were born, Mary Elizabeth and Ann Margaret Gusmann.  Anthony died on March 3, 1864 in Baltimore City, Maryland, USA, when their daughter Annie was only two years old and Margaret was three and a half.

One year after Anthony's death, Margaret Rose Sauerwald was born on March 16, 1865 in Baltimore.  Three months after the birth of Margaret Rose, Margaret Aumen Gusmann married Frederick Sauerwald on June 15, 1865 in Baltimore City, Maryland.  Frederick was born in 1836 in Saxony, Germany.  He was a cigar maker and a Baltimore City policeman. Frederick's mother was Margaret Sourwalt.  She was born in 1798 in Sachsen, Germany, and died in 1880 in Baltimore City, Maryland, United States of America.

Frederick died on February 23, 1896 in Baltimore and Margaret died almost six years later on January 2, 1902, also in Baltimore.  They were buried next to each other in Loudon Park Cemetery on Wilkens Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, Frederick on February 26, 1896, and Margaret on January 6, 1902.

Chapter 1: George and Mary Elizabeth (Gusmann) Rider

Mary Elizabeth Gusmann was born November 1, 1860 in Baltimore City, Maryland to Anthony and Margaret (Aumen) Gusmann.  She married George Rider about 1885, who was born in April 1852 in Maryland.  His parents are a mystery so it is unknown how or if he is related to Mary's aunts, Martha Rider (spouse of Francis Aumen) and Jennie Rider (spouse of William Aumen), although they were born in Germany according to the 1900 US Census.  George and Mary had no children.  In the 1910 US Census, they are listed as boarders at the home of Mary's step-brother Edward Sauerwald in Baltimore.

Chapter 2: Peter and Anne Margaret "Annie" (Gusmann) Grau

Ann Margaret "Annie" Gusmann was born on February 28, 1862 in Baltimore Highlands, Baltimore, Maryland to Anthony and Margaret (Aumen) Gusmann.  She married Peter Grau, the son of Albert and Barbara (Lebenger) Grau, and had seven children.  She died on May 1, 1924 at the home of her daughter, Sarah Bittinger, in Littlestown, Adams County, Pennsylvania.  She was buried on May 5, 1924 in Saint Aloysius Catholic Church Cemetery in Littlestown, next to her husband, Peter, a toll gatherer on the Baltimore Pike, who was born March 12, 1858 and died of typhoid fever October 28, 1897.

Peter and Annie's children were Emma Grau (November 1882, married A. J. McCarthy, lived in New York), Jennie M. Grau (July 1884), Anne C. "Annie" Grau McCann (April 1887-1920, married Claude McCann and mother of Myrna and Joseph McCann), Mary C. Grau (February 1889), Sarah A. Grau Bittinger (July 1890, married John Bittinger, Sr.), and John Edward Grau (July 1892-1951, buried St. Aloysius Cemetery).  The 1900 US Census says that Annie was the mother of 7 children with 6 living, so it is likely that one other child died in infancy.

Since her daughter Annie Grau McCann died in 1920, Annie's obituary should list five children, but instead it lists six, counting one Charles Grau.  Her husband Peter had a previous marriage to one Ann "Annie" Weaver in 1879 at Conewago Chapel in Adams County.  This Annie Weaver Grau died on the 5th of July 18__ aged 19 years, 5 months and 11 days. This Charles Albert Grau is the offspring of Peter's first marriage, and is a half-brother to Annie Gussman Grau's children.  He died March 4, 1961 and is buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery at Littlestown.

Chapter 3: James Oliver and Margaret Rose (Sauerwald) Durham

Margaret Rose Sauerwald was born on March 16, 1865 in Baltimore City, Maryland.  Three months after that, her mother Margaret married Frederick Sauerwald on June 15, 1865 in Baltimore City, Maryland.  It is not known whether Frederick is her natural father, although he did adopt her as his own.  According to the family, she was considered as a half-sister to Frederick and Margaret's other three children, Frank, Kate, and Edward Sauerwald.  (Mary and Ann Gusmann would be considered step-sisters to the Sauerwald children.)

Margaret Rose married James Oliver Durham.  James was born on October 16, 1864 in Baltimore. Margaret and James had one child, Margaret Alice Durham, on August 6, 1885 in Baltimore.  James died in June 1924 in Baltimore and Margaret died ten years later on September 18, 1934 in Baltimore.  James and Margaret were buried together in Mount Olivet Cemetery on Frederick Avenue in Baltimore City, Maryland.

Margaret Alice Durham married Louis William Romoser on June 10, 1903 in Baltimore, Maryland. Louis was born April 16, 1879 in Baltimore. They had six children together, Louis Edward Romoser (1904-1905), Robert Ellsworth Romoser (1906-1999), Margaret Virginia Romoser Hilleary (1907-1985), James Rodger Romoser (1910-1915), Audrey Merle Romoser McGaffin (1913-1993), and Edward Louis Romoser (1916- ).  Louis died June 25, 1947 in Baltimore and Margaret Alice died on August 22, 1969 in Sykesville, Carroll County, Maryland and she was buried on August 25.  They were both buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery on Frederick Avenue in Baltimore.

Chapter 4: Francis William "Frank" and Margaret Elizabeth (Aumen) Sauerwald

Francis William "Frank" Sauerwald was born in April of 1867 in Baltimore City, Maryland.  He married his cousin Margaret Elizabeth Aumen, daughter of his uncle and aunt, Cornelius and Agnes (Eckenrode) Aumen, so they were supposedly excommunicated from the Catholic Church when they were married in Baltimore City, Maryland.

Margaret's information is listed elsewhere on the site under volume three about Cornelius and Agnes Aumen.  Frank died on December 27, 1901, in Baltimore City, Maryland, when Elmer was six.  He was buried in Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore City, Maryland, next to his Margaret who 59 years later in 1961.  According to US Census records, Margaret worked as a dressmaker.

Frank and Margaret had one child, Elmer Francis Sauerwald, on July 1, 1895, in Baltimore City, Maryland.  Elmer married Dorothy L. Becker on February 22, 1922 in Baltimore City, Maryland and had two children, Robert Francis Sauerwald and Marie Elizabeth Sauerwald.  Elmer died June 15, 1956 in Baltimore and Dorothy on April 10, 1977 in Baltimore.  They are buried next to each other in New Cathedral Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.

Robert Francis Sauerwald was born on August 10, 1925, in Baltimore, Maryland, Robert married Mary Ellen Sims in May 1955 in Baltimore and had two children. Mary was born on February 16, 1929 in Baltimore.  Robert died on September 24, 1988 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Marie Elizabeth Sauerwald was born on August 6, between 1928 and 1930, in Baltimore City, Maryland.  Marie married Kenneth Ellwood Ochs on May 6, 1950 in Baltimore and had two children.  Kenneth was born on August 12, 1927 in Baltimore and died on January 20, 2003 in Baltimore.  He was buried on January 23, 2003 in Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Maryland.

Chapter 5: Catherine E. "Kate" Sauerwald Grebe Spedden Steffe Emmerick Steffe

Catherine E. "Kate" Sauerwald was the fifth child of Margaret.  She was born in October 1871 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland.  She had five marriages and died between 1935 and 1940 in Baltimore City, Maryland.

Kate's first marriage was to Charles E. Grebe in Baltimore about the year 1890.  Charles had been born in Germany in December 1865.  They had one child, Elmer L. Grebe, born in February 1892.  In the 1900 US Census, Charles, Kate, and Elmer were living at 417 Frederick Avenue in Baltimore City.

Kate's second marriage was to a Mr. Spedden about 1905 in Baltimore.  The 1910 US Census lists Katie as a widow having two children, but only one living, being Elmer Grebe.  Her second child either belonged to Charles Grebe or perhaps to this Mr. Spedden.

She next married Clarence Steffe about 1912 in Baltimore.  Clarence was born about 1883 in Baltimore.  Kate and Clarence were divorced by 1920.

About 1920, Kate married Lou Emmerick in Baltimore.

About 1925, she was remarried to her third husband Clarence Steffe in Baltimore.

Chapter 6: Edward P. and Ida M. Sauerwald

The final child of Frederick and Margaret was Edward P. Sauerwald, who was born in 1873 in Baltimore City, Maryland.  About 1895, Edward married Annie P. Blankner in Baltimore.  They had one child, Edward George Sauerwald, who sadly died of "Membranous Coup," at the young age of two-and-a-half years.  Edward George was born July 22, 1897 in Baltimore, and died December 15, 1899 in Baltimore.  He was buried one day later in Loudon Park Cemetery on Wilkens Avenue in Baltimore.

About 1898 in Baltimore, Edward married again, this time to Ida M. Myers, who was possibly previously married to a Mr. Heintz.  She was born in 1876-1878 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Edward and Ida had two children.  The first was  Howard P. Sauerwald, born in 1902 in Baltimore, Maryland.  The other was Louis Emory Sauerwald, born in 1903 in Baltimore, Maryland.  Louis married Marie K. Unknown who was born about 1905 in Maryland.

Edward P. Sauerwald died in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland, in September 1917.  Ida died in June 1961, also in Baltimore.  They are buried next to each other in Loudon Park Cemetery on Wilkens Avenue in Baltimore, Edward on September 13, 1917, and Ida on June 19, 1961.
